History

History of the International conference of Motivation and the SIG Motivation and Emotion

(written by Marold Wosnitza)

The 1st Workshop on Achievement and Task Motivation (WATM) was organized in 1985 in the Netherlands, and it was followed by three further workshops in Germany and Norway. Around the year 1995 the Special Interest Group (SIG) Motivation and Emotion of the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI) decided to organize a conference in the year in between the regular EARLI conferences. Since one of the two coordinators of the SIG at that time had taken the responsibility to organize the next WATM as well, the initiative was taken to combine the organization of both conferences in order to organize an International Conference on Motivation. The first one took place in 1996 in Landau. From then on, the SIG has taken the initiative and responsibility to organize the ICM/WATM every second year, also with support of EARLI. One of the consequences of this EARLI responsibility is that the SIG coordinators are always in the scientific committee of the conference. After this first combined conference in Landau, WATM/ICM expanded to further parts of Europe. Since the topics dealt with were expanded as well, and started to cover more than achievement and learning, but also broader motivational concepts such as autonomy, self-regulation, time perspective, or even cyberspace, in 2002 at the 8th conference in Moscow the name WATM was definitely changed to ICM.
